News about our new development

18 March 2021

On 17th March 2020, as the country was preparing for its first lockdown, Jewish Blind & Disabled announced that after years of searching for a suitable site, we completed on the purchase of a block of 24 apartments.

The development, which, until a lead donor is secured, we are calling number eight, is located on the corner of Bittacy Hill and Langstone Way, Mill Hill East in the heart of a growing Jewish Community.

The site is currently home to a block of 24 apartments built in 2004. Having done extensive work, financial modelling and following external advice we have decided that a total redevelopment of this site will result in a higher quality building and a more cost-effective scheme. Our new scheme will provide 30 one- and two-bedroom mobility apartments alongside communal facilities. It has been designed specifically to meet the needs of people with physical disabilities and/ or impaired vision.

The development will have a communal lounge, laundry facilities, a small garden and roof terrace. There is ample tenants parking enabling those who drive to be able to retain this aspect of their independence.

We anticipate works will start at the end of 2021 / early 2022 with completion expected in 2023. The cost for the works is estimated at £9-£9.5million. We need to raise a further £4.5million over the next few years to fund our plans for this site. We are confident with ongoing support from our generous donors this will be achieved.

Our existing tenants will be the first to tell you how Jewish Blind & Disabled provides members of our community living with physical disability and/or impaired vision with the keys to independence and thanks to our 24/7 onsite house managers, the peace of mind that they need to live their life to the full.

With a low turnaround of flats, our waiting list in the Barnet area continues to grow. This development will help to meet current and future needs and ensure we can be there for those that need us.

We will shortly be submitting a planning application for the development. If you would to comment on our plans or for further information, please email newdevelopment@jbd.org
