At Jewish Blind & Disabled, our volunteers are an important part of our community.
Volunteers take on a range of roles from befriending tenants to leading activities like art, exercise, and discussion groups. Our volunteers help make JBD a vibrant, warm community and we’re hugely grateful to each of them.
This month, we shine the spotlight on three wonderful people: Simon and Tracy Davis, and Barbara Wallis each of whom shows, in their own way, why giving time is so valuable.
Simon & Tracy Davis
Simon’s volunteering journey with JBD began during the pandemic, when isolation threatened to cut many people off from the outside world. As part of our telephone befriending service, Simon was matched with three tenants based on shared interests and called them every week without fail.
Even after restrictions eased, Simon continued to give his time and he now visits a tenant at Hilary Dennis Court every week. Recently, he’s been joined by his wife, Tracy, who befriends another tenant in the same building.
Simon says:
“When I started my volunteering role, I was reminded that so many of our community, especially older members, have fascinating and important stories to tell. Volunteering makes me realise how much we can learn just by taking the time to listen.”
Tracy adds:
“I was introduced to Sadie, who at the tender age of 98 wanted someone new to talk to. We’ve had so many lovely chats, and it’s been wonderful meeting other tenants. I love how everyone lives independently, but there’s always someone nearby for company if you want it.”
Barbara Wallis
Barbara Wallis has been part of the JBD family for nearly two decades, inspired by her late mother’s experience as a tenant
For over 11 years, Barbara has been a key part of the much-loved Tuesday afternoon teas, as well as helping to organise lunches and other events.
It makes me appreciate what I have and never take things for granted “I genuinely enjoy what I do and I’ll keep doing it as long as I can.”
At JBD, volunteers don’t just “help out” they build friendships, strengthen our community, and leave a lasting impact on the lives of those they meet.
