In March, weeks before lockdown, we launched a new staff award scheme to recognise the efforts of their front line staff. Little did we know what was to follow and the flood of nominations we would receive from tenants and their families.

The Above & Beyond Award was originally meant to be handed out to one member of staff once every three months, but with so many nominations multiple awards are being handed out as an opportunity to both reward and highlight the incredible lengths its team are going to throughout this period.

The first winner was Nora O’Carroll, a cleaner at Cherry Tree Court in Kingsbury, who gave up her weekend on several occasions, to organise and collect a delivery of donated Kosher food from her local Morrisons.

JBD chief executive Lisa Wimborne commented: “Nora is always looking at ways she can support our tenants. Through her networks she organised and collected a delivery of Kosher food from her local Morrisons in her own time. The delivery was so big it has benefitted tenants across all seven of our buildings.”

Nora’s win was followed by awards for Frances & Dick James cleaner Leyla Mohammed and Hilary Dennis Court house managers Nicole Zelmanovits and Sue Leff and cleaner Kim Holt. All were nominated for the extra help and kindness they show those who live in their buildings – doing everything from posting letters to supporting tenants through illness to putting on a socially distanced VE Day party.

Finally, the community engagement team of Simone Mazin, Debbie Rees and Louise Marks were honoured after receiving multiple nominations for their hard work in recruiting, training and managing the 70 new volunteers who have been supporting our new shopping and telephone befriending services established to support tenants many of whom are isolating. The team were also rewarded for their remarkable efforts in supporting tenants to engage in a wide range of daily Zoom events. Many of the tenants participating in these events had never heard of Zoom let alone used it. The team have supported tenants from across the organisations 7 developments to access these popular events from Challah Bakes to Quizes, Discussion groups and Chair Exercises.

All of the award winners receive an Amazon voucher as a token of appreciation for going above and beyond. Lisa added: “The Above and Beyond award was launched to recognise and celebrate the efforts of our staff. When we launched the award we had no idea that the staff were about to face such challenging times, I have been blown away by the efforts of the whole team, I didn’t expect to see an entire workforce going above and beyond the call of duty but they have. Deciding the winners hasn’t been easy. These awards are a wonderful way to recognise the tremendous efforts of all of our staff, especially the front-line team who are doing all they can to support and protect our tenants.”
